If your watch has stopped working, the most common reason is a dead battery. The good news is that you don’t always need to visit a watch repair shop replacing a watch battery at home is possible with just a few simple tools and a little care. On Crone World, we share simple and practical watch repair guides to help you fix your own timepieces.
Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
Find a clean table or flat surface where you can work comfortably. Make sure the area is well-lit so you can see all the tiny parts clearly. Place a soft cloth on the table to avoid scratches on your watch.
Step 2: Open the Back Cover
Hold the watch face-down. Most watches have a small notch or cut on the edge of the back cover.
-
If you have a watch repair tool, use it.
-
If not, a small knife can work.
Insert the knife tip into the notch and gently push outward. The back cover will pop open.
Step 3: Remove the Plastic Case Holder
Inside the watch, you may see a small white plastic piece holding the movement in place. Carefully lift this piece out without applying too much pressure.
Step 4: Take Out the Old Battery
Now you’ll see the battery (cell). One side is usually held in place with a thin metal clip or strip.
-
Use the tip of your knife or a small tool to gently push the clip outward.
-
The battery will pop out easily.
Tip: If you replace the battery but your watch still doesn’t work, it may need additional fixes. Read our guide here: How to Repair a Quartz Watch That Stopped Working.
Step 5: Insert the New Battery
Take a new battery of the same type. Place it in the slot carefully.
-
First, slide it under the clip.
-
Then press down gently on the opposite side until it clicks into place.
Step 6: Reassemble the Watch
Put the white plastic holder back into position.
Check the back cover you’ll notice a small cut or edge. Align that part with the crown (the side where the watch pin is).
Press the cover firmly until it locks into place.
Step 7: Set the Time
Turn your watch over, pull out the crown slightly, and set the correct time. Push the crown back in your watch should now be ticking again!
